October 2011: With the basis of the branch structure established, I decided to begin carving the deadwood on the tree. This was the point where I began to 'dress' the large scars left from the heavy trunkchops carried out in August 2010 when I had first established the trunk itself.
Some of the 'chops' had already been hollowed to a degree, but I now needed to established an overall cohesive design to all the various areas of deadwood.

Using my die-grinder I spent a number of hours carving the tree. I wanted to create a hollow trunk; this required the removal of a large volume of fairly hard-wood (Privet-wood can be very strong and difficult to carve until it begins to rot and breakdown).

October 2011: The first session of carving completed
February 2012: During a quiet work-period during the Winter I attacked the deadwood a second time, removing more wood and further establishing the deadwood design. The bonsai was also defoliated and rewired.

March 2012: With the tree given its first styling and carving, I decided that the tree could go into its first bonsai pot. However, first the rootball would need some reduction in size to fit into a bonsai pot!

These roots at the front of the tree were attached to newly-created deadwood; they would not be keeping the tree alive anymore, would naturally die over the following year and therefore could be removed immediately.
